April 28: Our Opening Organ Voluntary is a transcription of an improvisation by the celebrated organist of Notre Dame-de-Paris (for thirty-seven years, 1900-1937), Louis Vierne. Although Vierne was born nearly blind, an operation when he was six years old allowed him to distinguish shapes and read large letters (he wrote music on very large manuscript paper). He died at the console of Notre Dame on June 2, 1937, as he was completing his 1,750th organ recital on that famed instrument, with his student Maurice Duruflé at his side. Vierne recorded a series of improvisations at Notre Dame in November of 1928: Duruflé transcribed these pieces from the original recordings, and published them in 1954. Our Offertory Anthem is perhaps the best-known choral work (and for good reason) of Healey Willan – born in England, but who immigrated to Canada in 1913. Willan served at the Church of St. Mary Madgalene in Toronto from 1921 until his death in 1968, forty-seven years later.
