The Story of Stephen and Jesse Betts” and “Stories of God\, Stories of Race\, and Stories of St. Mark’s”. DESCRIPTION:Bus Tour: American Revolution Local Hero & St. Mark’s founder Captain Stephen Betts\, Enslaved Jesse Betts\, and the Burning of Norwalk\n\n\n\n\nLed by St. Mark’s parishioner and NSDAR Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter member Lisa Melland\, this free bus tour explores the story of New Canaan Revolutionary War Patriot Captain Stephen Betts\, the enslaved then free man of color Jesse Betts\, and the early days of the church in Connecticut. Captain Stephen Betts fought in thirteen battles of the American Revolution including in Redoubt #10 at Yorktown and was also a slave holder. View what appears to be a segregated section of Canoe Hill Cemetery and hear about local Revolutionary War battles. \nLisa Melland is the lead researcher\, presenter\, and producer behind both “America 250! The Story of Stephen and Jesse Betts” and “Stories of God\, Stories of Race\, and Stories of St. Mark’s”. The latter led to the Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter NSDAR co-sponsoring stone markers in St. Mark’s West Road cemetery commemorating Captain Stephen Betts and Jesse Betts\, both buried there. DESCRIPTION:St. Mark’s Youth Summer Service Trip to South Carolina: July 20-25 \nFor High School Youth (Rising 9th Grade–Graduating Seniors) \nThis year’s youth service trip to South Carolina will take place Monday\, July 20 through Saturday\, July 25. During our week together\, we will serve\, learn\, and live in community in the South Carolina Lowcountry. \nWe will fly to Spring Island\, staying at Margaret Roscoe’s family house and another nearby home generously made available to our group for the week. Our service work will take place on nearby St. Helena Island\, where we will serve the Gullah community through our partnership with the St. Helena Gullah Housing Project\, assisting with home repairs for residents and supporting other community needs. \nOur workdays will be Tuesday through Friday\, typically beginning in the morning and finishing mid-afternoon.
