SUMMARY:Lent with Leonard: A journey through Lent with Leonard Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Led by the Rev. John Kennedy \nMondays from 7-8PM in the Youth Room\, February 23-March 30 \nLent is a journey through wilderness and shadow\, temptation and trial\, and the dark places of the heart and soul. It is also a journey sustained by the Spirit and Word of God\, the mercy of God\, and our longing for God\, which lead us to new life in Christ. Leonard Cohen (1934–2016)\, the celebrated songwriter and poet\, was intimately familiar with this interior terrain\, and so is an ideal guide for this pilgrimage. \nCohen was a master of the inner life\, of longing as a pathway to the divine\, and of the blessedness of brokenness. A deeply religious man—an observant Jew who studied Zen for decades and had a lifelong love for Jesus—Cohen’s poetry and music are saturated with spiritual and scriptural language and themes. \nWe will gather around Cohen’s prayers\, poetry\, and songs as a way of deepening our love and knowledge of God\, and of the divine love and mercy that are always given. Throughout the season\, Cohen’s Book of Mercy—a collection of psalm-like prayers published in 1984—will serve as our prayer book\, alongside close listening to some of his most devotional songs\, including “Hallelujah.” \nRegister here \nA playlist and syllabus will be shared about a week before the class begins.

SUMMARY:Three Sessions on The Episcopal Church & Anglican Way of Being Christian
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, April 29\, May 6\, May 13  |  5:30 – 6:30PM  |  Youth Room \nThe Episcopal Church\, a member of the Anglican Communion\, is part of one of the great Christian traditions. It is rooted in Scripture and the Sacraments\, and shaped by centuries of common prayer. This series\, led by the clergy of St. Mark’s\, introduces that tradition to anyone new to St. Mark’s\, curious about what Episcopalians believe and practice\, or interested in Confirmation or Reception. \nThe Bible in The Episcopal Church (April 29)\nScripture is at the center of our worship and theology. This session explores how the biblical canon came to be\, what it means to call these writings the Word of God\, and how Episcopalians read Scripture alongside reason and the church’s living tradition. \nBaptism and Eucharist: The Sacramental Life of the Church (May 6)\nThe two great sacraments are the foundation of the church’s life. This session traces Baptism and Eucharist from their origins in the ancient church to their place in Episcopal worship today\, and explores what it means to gather around the altar as the body of Christ. \nEpiscopal Identity and History: Who We Are and Where We Came From (May 13)\nThe Anglican tradition emerged from the English Reformation and\, through it\, from the ancient church. This session traces that history to The Episcopal Church in America\, examines how this church governs itself\, and reflects on what it means to be part of a worldwide communion. \nRegister online or call the Church Office at (203) 966-4515. Please register by April 29.
