Dear St. Mark’s friends,
October 15th, our Mission & Ministry Sunday, will mark the kickoff of our 2018 Stewardship program. One of the most important ministries we share is the ministry of giving. This is appropriate, as the generosity of God’s people at St. Mark’s enables us to bear witness to God’s love.
Today, we ask you to take a moment to pray, think, and discern how you might help to increase the impact of St. Mark’s near and far. Here are a few things to consider as you move forward:
You’ve heard amazing stories from fellow parishioners about how they have found this to be a place to “belong”, to be touched by God and to feel support and comfort as we face life’s challenges and celebrate life’s joys. These are the stories of our lives; the stories of our faith; the stories of God among us. We are blessed. We give in thanksgiving for all we have received, for all that we have been inspired to be, and for all we are challenged to become. We give because it is our faith practice, as children of God.
Making a pledge commitment enables the Vestry and staff to plan and budget effectively. If you have been in the habit of giving to St. Mark’s but do not pledge, please consider converting your gift to a pledge. A pledge is not a contract but a commitment that allows the Vestry to more accurately establish a budget for the upcoming church year. With a budget in place, staffing and maintenance needs can be met and liturgical, musical and educational offerings can be planned with confidence.
How much to pledge?
For some, the question of how much to give is simple. They give the biblical standard, the tithe (10%), to their church in thanksgiving for God’s abundance. Others seek to grow in their discipleship by giving an ever-increasing percentage of their income to the glory of God. And still others decide what to give by evaluating their financial situation, looking at the needs of their church and other organizations they love and pondering all of this with a prayerful heart before God. Whatever your process, we hope that you will consider an increase in your giving to more fully empower the mission and ministry of grace at St. Mark’s.
When to pledge and give?
A stewardship information package will be mailed in mid-October. In it, you’ll find detailed information about pledging, and the various ways you can fulfill your pledge.
In this program year, we are invited to be inspired by the life and teachings of St. Francis. In St. Francis, we have a stewardship role model who lived out the two spiritual truths that “God’s abundance will provide” and that “it is in giving that we receive.” We invite you to join us as we seek to grow in the knowledge and commitment of these truths.
