Past Mission Trips: 2016

Middle School Mission Trip–York, PA

July 10-15, 2016

Our Junior EYC trip this year will be in the historic town of York, PA. We'll be participating in community service along with around 60 people from three other youth groups. Our youth will learn Christ-like empathy and compassion as they meet the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of disadvantaged children, youth and adults.

During our week in York, our projects could include:

• Building friendships and fun activities with residents of local assisted living facilities who may not have frequent visits from friends or family members.

• Helping lead a children's day camp.

• Working with a local organization that helps young people discover principles for running a business and leading a successful life.

• Setting up and running a yard sale for a local congregation.

• Assisting a local social service organization committed to providing health, human, and senior living services.

After a week of serving the community in York, we'll stop at Hershey Park on the way home for a day of roller coasters, water rides, chocolate, and more!

Mescalero Apache Reservation, New Mexico

June 25-July 2, 2016

Our Senior EYC mission trip this summer will be to the Mescalero Reservation in New Mexico, home of the Mescalero Apache Native Americans. Surrounded by the deserts of New Mexico, the Mescalero Apache homeland is a lush, forested mountain world awash in the fresh scent of pine trees and the chatter of crystal-clear brooks. They have preserved their culture and traditional way of life here for many generations.

Though they have a peaceful and beautiful place to call home, it is not without its challenges. Strong winds and heavy snowfall cause damage to many homes, and residents are often without the resources for repairs. This is no surprise when one considers that nearly two of every five Mescalero people lives in poverty, highlighting their need all the more. We will be serving them in some of the following ways:

• Building wheelchair ramps and handrails

• Fixing leaky roofs

• Weatherizing homes

• Reconstructing sagging porches

• Painting projects

• Carpentry (extra Jesus points!)

This trip is both an excellent way to embody the love of Jesus and also a wonderful opportunity to learn about Native American culture and traditions. We will be working among the Mescalero Apache people for a week and not only serving them but getting to know them. As the Native American way of life becomes increasingly endangered, we too can be served and enriched through what they share with us about who they are and what they love.

In addition to our work on the Reservation, we will set aside some time to explore and have fun in the surrounding area. Two possibilities include the White Sands National Monument and the New Mexico Museum of Space History.

This trip is a great chance to learn about the Mescalero Apache way of life, to explore and have fun in the Southwestern United States, and most importantly, to grow in the Love of Christ by going beyond ourselves in coming alongside and serving othersl
