Class Schedule

2017-18: The Theology of St. Bonaventure

In keeping with this year’s focus on St. Francis, we will be exploring the work of the medieval theologian St. Bonaventure, a contemporary of St. Thomas Aquinas and one of our tradition’s great scholastics and mystics. We will begin the year by reading St. Bonaventure’s biography of St. Francis before dipping our toes into deeper theological waters with his Journey of the Soul into God and Tree of Life. St. Bonaventure’s thought is an extraordinarily beautiful fusion of mystical theology and Franciscan spirituality, forged in the crucible of a career spent navigating some of the most vexing issues ever to face the Order of Friars Minor as their Minister General and as their representative on the faculty of the University of Paris. As we move through the year, we'll be especially concerned with how Bonaventure's theology is governed from tip-to-toe by the life and story of Jesus, especially as refracted by the life and story of his follower, Francis.

If you’re looking for a way to deepen your spiritual life or come to a richer understanding of the mysteries of our faith, please do join us. All classes take place at St. Mark's in the Education Center. Join us in person, or by tuning in online on Tuesday mornings (Watch Live), or by watching the recording later in the week (class recordings are left online on the Watch Live page until the following week). All are welcome.
