Answers to the Crossword by Jim Bettridge

Answers to the Crossword

By now the letters of your puzzle are probably all filled in.  If not most of the answers can be found in the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, Wikipedia, or Google.  The asterisked clues specific to St. Mark’s would not be found in normal reference sources, so  here are  brief explanations of those answers:

7 Across - Willis MILLS, the parishioner and architect who stepped up in 1958 when after a two year struggle the parish was unable to come up with a satisfactory plan for  the new church and after the original architects were dismissed; he took charge and designed the new St. Mark’s.

11 Across -  Grant MORRILL, the rector who led the parish from 1955-1975 during a period of significant growth and included the building of the new church.

13 Across - Captain Stephen BETTS, after fighting in the revolution at Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, and Yorktown he led our forefathers in forming the Episcopal Society of Canaan Parish

21 Across - John HAIT, deeded a part of his farm (at what is now the corner of West Road and  Sunset Hill Road) “it being eleven rods by five rods to the professors of the Church of England”

38 Across - Michael BARTON - the rector from 1933-1955 who when the ,parish had outgrown the steepled church on God’s Acre (now the Lutheran church), gave up his rectory so it could be sold and the proceeds used toward the purchase of the McLane estate which is now our campus

42 Across - Peter WALSH, the rector since 2008 and visionary of 22 Down

16 Down - REREDOS, conceived by Grant Morrill, designed and built by Clark FitzGerald; the 184 figure sculptural depiction of acts of God and Man that is the background for the high altar

22 Down - CENTERFORMINISTRY - the biggest undertaking of St. Mark’s Parish since the building of the church in 1963.

17 Down - GODSACRE - the half acre triangle in town surrounded by three archetypical New England churches which until the mid-19th century was a cemetery
